What is the student meal assistance fund?
The Patriot 2 Patriot initiative originated in the Fall semester of 2012. The initiative was led by Yara Mowafy, an International Development major, and Jordan Bivings, a Conflict Analysis and Resolution major. Initially, Mowafy started a petition to donate unused meal plan meals to those in need at George Mason University. Meanwhile, Bivings founded Mason Meals, a student led organization that caters to the homeless population in D.C.
The duo teamed up to and pursued the petition which lasted a year and a half, and had over 2000 signatures from students, staff, alumni and faculty. However, the meal plan system at Mason upgraded to a system without "meal plans," making their vision impossible.
Mowafy and Bivings were able to join forces with University Life, Auxiliary Enterprises, Mason Dining, and other on campus offices to launch a version of the original program. The Student Meal Assistance Fund is now a donation based fund that provides meal vouchers to students that demonstrate a dire financial need. The fund is mainly run by the generosity of Mason Dining' contracting company Sodexo as well as the Office of Student Conduct and Case Management's supporting administrators.
Each donation goes a long way in helping a student in need at George Mason University. Please donate here.
The next phase of their initiative is to establish a scholarship that would award food or shelter insecure students in order to better their lives, and allow them to succeed in college.
